Exploring leisure curriculum and implementation for individuals in transition programs: Implications for TR
Session Description/Research Abstract
Transition programs for students with developmental disabilities, ages 18-22, focus on vocational skills and functional academics. Students graduating from these programs tend to have more leisure time than their typical peers suggesting the need for more training in leisure education. This session will look at survey results from special education teachers in these programs to better understand the needs of their students in regards to leisure training. Survey results also examined teachers knowledge and training regarding implementing leisure education programs for their students. How can recreational therapist support both groups to obtain the best possible outcomes?

Biographical Information
MaryJo Archambault is an associate professor at Southern Connecticut State University. She is both the undergraduate and graduate coordinator for the recreational therapy programs. She is also the Co-Program Coordinator of the Institute for Adapted Sports and Inclusive Recreation. MaryJo has practiced recreation therapy in the field for over 25 years. Her experiences range from Skilled Nursing, Psychiatric Hospitals, Physical Rehabilitations Hospitals, and Community Programming. She has been involved with a transition program on her campus since 2010.

Biographical Information
Judy Terpstra is a professor at Southern Connecticut State University in the Department of Special Education. She has worked in the field of special education for 28 years in a variety of roles and with children and young adults with many types of disabilities. She has worked as a teacher, consultant, and professor. For the past 5 years, she has been the faculty liaison/consultant to the Hamden Transition Academy which is a grant funded program between the school district and the university and currently in its 19th year on campus.
