Quick and creative adaptations to your everyday life
Session Description/Research Abstract
This presentation will cover how to adapt everyday activities for independence. Everything from a night out with friends/family, shopping, days on the water, and everything in between.

Biographical Information
Valerie Miller has been a Recreational Therapist at Shepherd Center adult team and Dual specialty team in the Post Acute Department for the last 3 years. Prior to Shepherd Center Val worked at Mount Sinai Health System in New York City on their inpatient rehab units for 5 years. Val works on interdisciplinary teams which includes: Physical Therapist, Occupational Therapist, Speech Therapist, Nurse, Counselors, and physiatrist. Val leads and plans yearly SCUBA trip to Bonaire with community members who have Brain Injuries and/or Spinal Cord Injuries. Val works with the Young Adult program assisting those transitioning to becoming independent adults in the community after injury.

Biographical Information
La-Shannon Ali has been a member of Shepherd Center adult and adolescent teams in the Post-Acute Department and inpatient for the last 13 years. Prior to shepherd center she has also been the lead internship coordinator since 2015. The lead internship role requires she has a thorough understanding of the requirements for NCTRC, Shepherd Center, and for each specific University that has a student applying for an internship. Her knowledge and experience of working with spinal cord injury patients consists of working with an interdisciplinary team, that includes a Physical Therapist, Speech Therapist, Occupational Therapist, Counselor, Nurse, and a Physiatrist.
