Using Theory to Improve RT Practice in SUD Treatment
Session Description/Research Abstract
This session will provide participants the opportunity to review theories that can shape TR service delivery for people with SUD. Theories relevant to both RT and SUD will be reviewed, as will using theory to inform all portions of the APIED process. An example of a theory-based model for care will be shared, along with guidance on how to implement this at participants’ agencies.

3. Understand the steps in developing theory-based program design.

Biographical Information
Jackie Dyke has been a CTRS since 2009.
She is an Assistant Professor at SUNY Cortland in the Recreation, Parks and Leisure Studies Department. Prior to joining the faculty at SUNY Cortland, Jackie worked with adults with substance use disorders in inpatient treatment and in the community. Jackie designed, opened, and won funding for a recovery community center in Syracuse, NY that centers around building healthy leisure opportunities for adults in recovery. She also developed and launched an aftercare program and won funding for other SUD and recovery related ventures in the greater Syracuse, NY area.
Jackie’s research interests include Recreational Therapy Practice at a Systems Level, Clinical Supervision in Recreational Therapy, and Recreational Therapy within the Treatment of Substance Use Disorders.
Jackie enjoys spending time with her family, two dogs, and two cats. Her favorite leisure pursuits are gardening, swimming, hiking, and cheering on her sons at their Little League games.

Biographical Information
Currently an assistant professor at SUNY Cortland, Jason has 20 years of experience in education and human services. During that time Jason has worked with at-risk youth, individuals with intellectual and development disabilities, and individuals with substance use disorders. Jason has a wide range of teaching, training, and presenting experience that often involves interactive and thought-provoking presentations.
Academically, Jason graduated from Canterbury Christchurch University College in the UK with a bachelor’s degree in Business Studies and Sport Science. After moving to the United States, Jason earned a second bachelor’s degree from SUNY Cortland in History and Political Science, before completing his MS in Therapeutic Recreation, also at SUNY Cortland. Jason has been a certified CTRS since 2013. Jason completed his Doctorate at Clemson University with a concentration in Recreation Therapy.
Jason’s research interests include Identity, Therapeutic Recreation Professional Advancement, Substance Use Disorders, Purple Recreation, Recreation Therapy Programming, and Peer Workforce Initiatives in Mental Health and Substance Use Disorders.
