Ballroom 4
Session Description/Research Abstract

This session will provide practitioners with a practical framework that they can use for evaluating their agency's current method of client assessment. Client assessment will be looked at in terms of being a systematic process that involves gathering and interpreting information for the purpose of making decisions. The framework will be presented via lecture with some large and small group discussions and an interactive application of the framework to examples provided by the audience and/or presenter. Please bring assessment material from your facility if possible to serve as the basis for some of the small group work.

*PLEASE BRING A COPY OF YOUR ASSESSMENT TO USE DURING THE SESSION.

Biographical Information

Earned MS in Recreation, Emphasis in TR, from Michigan State University (MSU) in 1989. As a practitioner I worked primarily in behavioral health settings at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, Michigan with a variety of populations (adolescents, adults, geriatrics), diagnostic groups (substance related disorders and psychiatric units) and settings (in-patient and partial hospitalization programs) for 18 years. While at Sparrow, I taught at MSU for the last 3 years that they had a TR emphasis area (1998-2001). Moved to New Zealand from 2002-2004 and taught in the first undergraduate TR program in the southern hemisphere. Returned to Michigan and resumed working at Sparrow Hospital and then joined the faculty of the Grand Valley State University (GVSU) RecTx program in 2008. Earned Doctorate of Health Education from A.T. Still University in 2018. AT GVSU I have served as the RecTx program director and am now the chair for the Director of the School of Interdisciplinary Health while continuing to teach in RecTx program. One of many Past Presidents of ATRA having finished my term as Immediate Past President in 2021. Initially became interested in assessment while a graduate student at MSU while doing a project focused on best practices in assessment for day treatment programs serving those diagnosed with chronic mental illness. Since my time in education, one of the things I have found very enlightening is visiting students on internships and engaging with practiioners related to how well their assessment process serves their current purpose. Sometimes well, sometimes not so well.
