Utilizing Virtual Reality in a Pediatric Physical Medicine & Rehab Setting

Session Description/Research Abstract

Have you have wondered how an organization can combine the work of therapeutic recreation and physical therapy? This session will discuss the results of a case study utilizing virtual reality and a Lokomat Gait Training Machine to increase endurance, multitasking, and correct ambulation of gait in a patient with cerebral palsy.

Biographical Information

Christine Crayton is an Assistive Technology Specialist at CRIT USA is San Antonio, TX. She graduated from Texas State University with a Doctor of Physical Therapy in 2019 and a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science Pre Physical Therapy in 2016. Christine spent her third year of physical therapy school focusing on gaining experience in different pediatric facilities including inpatient rehab, acute rehab and outpatient therapy at CRIT. After spending a year and a half treating as a physical therapist, she was intrigued by the equipment side of physical therapy and now focuses on fitting, adjusting, recommending and ordering equipment for our CRIT children. Christine is also a Child Safety Passenger Technician which allows her to assess, help, and educate on car seats and appropriate harnessing.

Biographical Information

Natalie Klinsky is the Therapeutic Recreation Coordinator at CRIT USA in San Antonio, TX. She graduated from Texas State University with a Master of Science in Recreation and Leisure Sciences with a concentration in Therapeutic Recreation and a Bachelor of Science in Recreation Management from Appalachian State University. She spent over 10 years in the summer camp field and over 20+ years in competitive swimming, lifeguarding, pool management, and teaching swimming. At CRIT, she manages the Therapeutic Recreation Department including 1:1's, groups, aquatics, and social outings. She also coordinates the Buddy Program which highlights and promotes inclusion and socialization through community integration. Over the past 3 years, Natalie became interested in utilizing Virtual Realty as a way to help with physical, cognitive, emotional, and social skills. Many patients at CRIT utilize virtual reality to help increase their physical skills and endurance, FM/UE skills, reduce anxiety, and increase leisure awareness as highlighted in this case study.
