Session Abstract

In 2020-21, University of Washington Libraries staff from Cataloging and Metadata Services, Special Collections, and the Tateuchi East Asia Library collaborated on a statement on offensive language in library resource descriptions. The statement includes a form for users to submit harmful metadata in the Libraries’ discovery systems for remediation. This presentation will cover internal workflows developed to address metadata remediation requests, metadata remediation accomplished from submissions, responses, outcomes, and lessons learned. Plans for embedding a persistent icon linked to the statement and form in Primo’s “Send To” section for increased patron visibility will also be discussed.

Learning Outcome #1

Participants will gain familiarity with workflows for supporting user-submitted requests for harmful metadata remediation that can be adapted locally in whole or part.
