Only Accessions in the Building?
Session Abstract
In the last 50 years, staff in high-density storage facilities have accessioned millions of physical library materials into climate-controlled preservation environments. These items are shelved by size to maximize the use of space and to delay the expensive construction of additional storage modules. For a variety of reasons, high-density facilities have deaccessioned very little. The assumption was that deaccessioning would be far too expensive and complex. WRLC has begun to challenge these assumptions. Over the last 18 months, we have developed Alma workflows to identify and simplify the work of removing material to maximize the shelving available to our partner institutions. A path forward for large-scale deaccessions will be demonstrated.
