H3b Hispanic Renters: Comparison of Demographic Characteristics and Use of Rental Assistance

jeudi 18 mai 2023 à 13:00–14:30 PDT
Room 3
Short Description

This research uses the 2019 American Housing Survey to examine the demographic characteristics of and use of rental assistance among Hispanic renter households relative to White, Black, and Asian renter households in the United States. We then examine household characteristics and the use of government rental assistance between Hispanic groups based on citizenship and country of origin. This study aims to understand better the characteristics of Hispanic renter households and their use of rental assistance. The results show that Hispanic and Black renters in our sample had the lowest household incomes and, compared to non-Hispanic White renters, were more likely to use rental assistance. Our findings suggest that Hispanic renters who are foreign-born and not U.S. citizens face economic challenges and are less likely to receive housing assistance. The use of rental assistance has different odds ratios for each racial/ethnic group and among the three Hispanic sub-groups. This study aims to contribute to our understanding of Hispanic renter households and their access to housing programs that support well-being and address disadvantages in the housing market.
