Weed with Wisdom: an Application Facilitating In-The-Stacks Collection Management
Session Abstract
The "CM In-The-Stacks" App is an Alma API-based application that assists library staff with making collection development decisions in the stacks, avoiding historical practices of printing shelf lists or reviewing 10,000+ lines of a circulation report. This locally developed application uses a simple interface, along with the Alma bibliographic records and inventory and Analytics APIs, to scan an item barcode and return circulation and bibliographic data. The person scanning decides whether to mark the item as Keep, Review Further, or Withdraw. The application records the choice in Alma Statistics Note 3. Considerations were made for statistical gathering, a second review of items marked for withdrawal, and security options. The health sciences librarian will walk through the background of the project and demonstrate it in real-time. The developer will walk through how the process works and how collaboration contributed to this innovative approach to API use.
