Managing Inappropriate Sexualized Behaviors in Health Care: Reducing the Risk of Harm to Mental Health Professionals

Description
Healthcare providers including Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialists (CTRSs) are at a 16-times greater risk for nonfatal workplace violence (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2020). Inappropriate sexual behaviors (ISBs) are one example of this type of violence. ISBs occur more frequently in certain health care settings such as psychiatric care. Many factors that increase an individual’s risk or engaging in ISBs align with mental health diagnoses or comorbid traumatic experiences. During this session, participants will further define ISBs, discuss trends in health care, and methods for managing and responding to ISBs faced by Therapeutic Recreation (TR) professionals. This session will include an interactive component to discuss a clinical scenario and allow time for participants to develop appropriate responses and solutions for managing ISBs.

Jamie Sympson, CTRS-BH, Nationwide Children's Hospital
Biographical Statement
Jamie Sympson is a graduate of the University of Toledo and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Recreational Therapy. Jamie has received her specialization designation in Behavioral Health for her field as of 2021. Jamie has worked at Nationwide Children’s Hospital (NCH) for nearly 7 years in behavioral health and chronic pain settings. Jamie currently works as the Clinical Leader for Clinical Therapies Behavioral Health located at NCH in which she directly supervises Occupational Therapy (OT), Speech Language Pathology (SLP) and Therapeutic Recreation (TR) team members. Jamie directly manages team members and supports program development within the inpatient pediatric behavioral health units, the Child and Adolescent Partial Hospitalization Program, the Eating Disorder Clinic, the Early Childhood Mental Health clinic, and the Intensive Pain Rehabilitation and Education Program (IPREP). Additionally, Jamie is a part of the Clinical Therapies Safety Committee in which Jamie supports creating and providing education, training, and other resources surrounding patient and staff safety within the Clinical Therapies division. Jamie is a member of the Ohio Recreation Therapy Association (ORTA) and the American Therapeutic Recreation Association (ATRA) as well as an affiliate member of the Ohio Occupational Therapy Association (OOTA) and the Ohio Speech-Language-Hearing Association (OSHLA).
