This virtual event will run February 1 - 29, 2024 on ATRA's virtual learning platform. Additional sessions may be added so please check back regularly to view the program. 

Adverse Childhood Experiences and Their Impact on Mental Health Across the Lifespan

Description

Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE's) shape not only the child's development, but also mental health throughout the lifespan. Through this presentation, we will review models and theories of child development, various ACE's, and the lifetime effects of various ACE's on mental health. We will also review how Recreational Therapy can aid in building resiliency and strategies for coping with various ACE's in both childhood and adulthood.

By the end of the session, participants will be able to identify two models of childhood development. 

By the end of the session, participants will be able to identify at least 3 adverse childhood experiences and explain how various ACE's shape a person's mental health(both acute and long term)

By the end of the session, participants will identify 3 Recreational Therapy interventions that can aid in building resiliency and strategies for coping with various ACE's throughout the lifespan.

Kristin Whaley, Nationwide Children's Hospital
Biographical Statement

Kristin Whaley, CTRS, Specialization in Pediatrics, serves as a Clinical Lead for Therapeutic Recreation at Nationwide Children's Hospital. Kristin works as part of a multidisciplinary team to promote leisure and recreation to help individuals meet their functional goals and increase their overall quality of life. She graduated from Slippery Rock Univeristy with a BS in Recreational Therapy and University of Minnesota with a Masters of Arts in Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health.
