The following is the TENTATIVE program and schedule for the 2024 ATRA Annual Conference in Kansas City, MO. Presentations, times and other details are subject to change between now and the start of the conference in October.

Regarding CEUs, please note: NCTRC CE Pre-approval will be pending; all sessions may not have been approved by NCTRC. We will post an update when approval for sessions has been received and sessions appropriate for specialty certification as identified by NCTRC.

Biographical Information

Dr. Loy is a Professor of Recreational Therapy and has been employed at East Carolina University since 2001. He is currently a board member of the Committee on Accreditation of Recreational Therapy Education (CARTE) and President-elect of the National Academy of Recreational Therapists (NART). He is also a certified (since 1989) and licensed (2001) recreational therapist. Prior to academia, he worked as a recreational therapy practitioner in both community and clinical settings. His research and grant funding has focused on adapted sports and recreation, wheelchair propulsion biomechanics, coping and adjustment to disability, measurement and psychometrics, and sensory integration in neurodivergent population.

Karley Brouwer

Biographical Information

Karley graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science in Therapeutic Recreation at Grand Valley State University in 2017. She has previous work experience in a physical inpatient sub-acute rehabilitation center for older adults. Currently, she works as the Recreational Therapy Supervisor in post-acute rehabilitation at Origami Rehabilitation and a Recreational Therapist within home and community rehabilitation at Rehab Without Walls. Both of these organizations specialize in neurobehavioral rehabilitation. She loves having the opportunity to positively impact the lives of individuals through their personal leisure and recreation pursuits, goals, and new interests. Thus, helping pave the way to the ability and independence for each client to enjoy their hobbies and interests, unfolding an amazing journey. In doing so, returning happiness and enjoyment, feelings of empowerment and success, further increasing their overall wellness, impacting the individual, friends and families. Karley is a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS), Certified Dementia Practitioner (CDP), Certified Clinical LoveYourBrain Yoga Instructor, and a Certified Brain Injury Specialist (CBIS). She is currently working to obtain her 200-hour yoga teacher training (RYT 200). She is also a current practitioner board member and the Treasurer of the Committee on Accreditation of Recreational Therapy Education (CARTE).
