Invited Speaker Teaching Human Evolution: Obstacles and Opportunities
Session Description
Levels of acceptance of evolution in the United State, especially human evolution, are relatively low. Yet there is intense interest in understanding our own origins and evolution, and learning about evolution in humans can be a ‘hook’ to generate interest in evolution more broadly. This talk will review approaches that support positive dialogue and engagement on this topic, even in areas where there is some resistance to learning about evolution, and provide data from two projects that developed teaching materials for use in high school biology classrooms using these approaches.
