A5a Exploring the Relationship between Health and Financial Literacy among Emerging Youth: A Qualitative Study

Short Description

This study explores the intersection of health literacy and financial literacy among emerging youth in India, a population at a formative stage of developing lifelong behaviors. While prior research has shown that health literacy reduces health inequalities and financial literacy supports rational decision-making, few studies examine how these literacies are connected and how young people themselves perceive and practice them. Using qualitative focus group discussions with 24 participants, this research investigates youth perspectives on health priorities, self-care practices, financial management strategies, and the influence of family, society, and digital platforms. The findings reveal strong parallels between health and finance, with participants viewing both as essential foundations for future security, resilience, and independence. Parents and family emerged as the most influential sources of guidance, while online platforms played a growing yet sometimes unreliable role. By highlighting these connections, the study addresses a critical gap in existing literature and provides insights for educators, policymakers, and practitioners seeking to design integrated strategies that promote youth well-being. The results align with ACCI’s mission of enhancing consumer and family economic well-being by demonstrating how combined health and financial literacy can prepare young people for long-term stability and sustainable futures.
