The Connection Rx: Social Prescribing and Sexual Wellness for Belonging in IDD Care

Saturday, October 17, 2026 at 2:15 PM–3:15 PM PDT
Laurel
Session Description

As the healthcare landscape shifts toward social prescribing, recreational therapists are uniquely positioned to spearhead sexual wellness initiatives for the IDD community. This session provides a high-level roadmap of the newly released ATRA Sexual Wellness through RT Intensive, an evidence-based framework designed to transition the profession from clinical avoidance to proactive advocacy and treatment. By integrating social skills development and comprehensive sexual health education through the APIED process, we equip RTs to serve as the primary providers of social referrals - supporting the essential human rights to intimacy, safety, and authentic community belonging.

Learning Outcomes

1) Identify three systemic barriers to sexual wellness for individuals with IDD and the corresponding role of the recreational therapist in advocating for equitable, trauma-informed care. 2) Describe the application of the APIED process to integrate Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) into individualized RT treatment planning for individuals with IDD. 3) Explain the relationship between leisure-based social skill development and the implementation of sexual health interventions as a pathway for social prescribing in IDD care.

Biographical Information

Thea Kavanaugh, a recreational therapist, is the founder of REAL Therapeutics, LLC. She has 20 years of experience working with youth and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) in school and community settings. As a consultant and contractor, she integrates direct client support with systemic program development. Thea currently contracts with the New Mexico Health Care Authority’s Developmental Disabilities Supports Division to manage the Socialization and Sexuality Education (SSE) service. In this role, she leads quality assurance and educational outreach for the state’s DD Waiver Medicaid program. Additionally, she facilitates the ‘Friends and Relationships Course’ as an independent provider in Southwest New Mexico. Thea’s focus on sexual health began while providing leisure education in public schools, where she noted a lack of relationship guidance for students with disabilities. She found that standard social skills training did not address the complexities of human connection or sexual wellness. By combining clinical recreational therapy with education, she works to reduce isolation and remove barriers to intimacy, ensuring individuals have the resources to live self-directed lives.
