Abstract

In the United States, public institutions will be required to meet WCAG 2.1, Level AA for web accessible digital content. While there are exceptions for archival content, the University Archives and Special Collections at Florida Gulf Coast University developed a framework for digital archival materials to meet these guidelines.

The presenters worked to create departmental policy and workflows to incorporate alternative text, captions, and more accessible PDFs. This work was complicated by the concurrent transition to NDE and Alma Specto, with their updated tools and new user experience design. However, some of these new functionalities - OCR extraction, ALTO generation, audio/video captions - became pearls for improving the accessibility of new and existing content.

After highlighting specific use cases related to the process of implementing accessible digital content in Specto, the presenters will share outstanding goals, next steps, and take questions from the audience.
