Abstract

This presentation introduces a custom Drupal migration module developed at the University of Pittsburgh University Library System to automate the seamless migration of Encoded Archival Description (EAD) from ArchivesSpace source into an Islandora 2 (Drupal-based) environment.

Addressing a multi-layered migration challenge, the module implements a full Extract–Transform–Load pipeline: retrieving content via the ArchivesSpace REST API, processing EAD XML files as Drupal Media entities, mapping structured metadata into Drupal nodes, and supporting incremental updates when source records are modified.

Designed for reusability, the open-source module offers institutions using Islandora a configurable, standards-aligned solution that eliminates error-prone manual migration. The approach also delivers scalable automation, fidelity to EAD standards, and a community-ready contribution to the Islandora and Drupal communities.
