Learning Objectives

Following this session, participants will be able to evaluate discovery services from two opposing perspectives: the idealistic view that higher education is about curiosity, lifelong learning, and education for its own sake; and the pragmatic view that higher education is about workforce preparation, skill development, and measurable outcomes.

Following this session, participants will be able to describe the idealistic and pragmatic perspectives on higher education and library services and articulate their own philosophy of librarianship in these terms.\

Following this session, participants will be able to debate the merits of discovery services in libraries struggling to acheive a shared vision for library services.

Abstract

This session is a Discussion Session and will be lead by the presenter.  Discovery services (e.g., Summon, Ebsco Discovery Service) satisfies user needs, which makes the pragmatic librarian happy.  However, they undermine the struggle idealist librarians believe is required to learn. In this session, we discuss the advantages and drawbacks to implenting discovery services from these opposing perspectives on higher education.
