Participating in the Google Book Search Project as an Alma Library
Description
In 2007, the Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC) partnered with Google to digitize as many as 10 million volumes across all CIC library systems as part of the Google Book Search Project. Digitized materials that are in the public domain are made available to HathiTrust. The University of Minnesota started its participation in the project in 2009. A key component to the project is using the university's library system to manage the materials being digitized and to provide exports of the bibliographic and item records to both Google and HathiTrust. Minnesota has also chosen to use its library system to manage the tracking of shipments throughout the duration of the project.
This presentation will discuss the challenges encounted by Minnesota in continuing its obligations to the project as it migrated to Alma in 2014. This will include a discussion of how Minnesota uses Alma to track full shipments, how individual items that are part of project are tracked, the processes used to create metadata extracts for items involved in the digitization project, and the ongoing challenges Minnesota has yet to solve.
