Controlled Vocabularies in Alma and Primo: from Reality to Vision

Thursday, May 7, 2015 at 4:20 PM–5:05 PM CDT
Spring Park Bay
Description

Traditional authority control was oriented to support alphabetical indexing in a controlled, single-source environment.  The move to environments that rely largely on keyword search, ranked results, facet displays, and data from multiple sources raises serious questions regarding the role of controlled vocabularies in the new environment and the need for alternative data models to add value to users' searching.  This presentation will examine how controlled vocabularies are currently implemented in Alma and Primo, the intended functions of controlled vocabularies, and the options for better data models and improved implementation of controlled vocabularies to enhance search functionality and results.
