Using Alma APIs to implement bibliographic resource discovery

Friday, May 8, 2015 at 12:15 PM–1:00 PM CDT
Elk Lake
Description

At the University of Wisconsin-Madison we are leveraging our digital collections infrastructure and the Alma APIs to provide full bibliographic resource discovery of the resources the University of Wisconsin System consortium manages in Alma.  In this presentation, we describe our motivations, our approach to the user experience of resource discovery across disparate resource types, the architecture of our discovery infrastructure at a very high level, and our experience with using the Alma APIs to determine: holdings and item availability; to place requests; to manage renewals and fines; and with Alma's publish-to-Primo process to provide bibliographic and inventory data for indexing.  The presentation is aimed at a non-technical audience, although we provide references to details for those who are interested.  We include a demonstration of our discovery interface, which is our alternative to Primo.
