Know Your Data: A Structured Approach to Migration Preparation, Post-Migration Clean-up, and Ongoing Metadata Maintenance

vendredi 8 mai 2015 à 09:00–09:45 CDT
Lake Calhoun
Description

On December 1, 2014, following over a year of preparation, Oregon State University Libraries migrated from Millennium to Alma/Primo along with other members of the Orbis Cascade Alliance.  Documentation from the Alliance, based on information from Ex Libris, guided us through this critical year of preparation.  Despite all of the preparatory work, in our post-migration environment, OSU Libraries staff members continue to spend significant amounts of time in record clean up.  If we had had a better understanding of the metadata in our old system, such as the various codes used in item, order, and check-in records or the groups of bibliographic records loaded into Millennium over the past 15 years, pre-migration work would have included several other projects.

To facilitate pre- and post-migration clean up as well as to plan for ongoing maintenance of metadata, this presentation will look at techniques that catalog managers can use to examine record components and track characteristics of groups of records.  Attendees will be able to apply these methods to analyze their own databases for the purpose of maintaining the integrity of their metadata.
