BIM Among Friends: The Benefits of Building Cross-Industry Relationships
Summary
We have all been told that BIM and alternative delivery methods rely on the collaborative efforts of all parties involved. In the traditional AEC community however, silos of risk and responsibility often prevent the project team from operating as one cohesive unit. The combination of J.C. Cannistraro and KlingStubbins is one example of a subcontractor/architect relationship that has proven to maximize project value. Through the lessons learned from joint project experience at 640 Memorial Drive in Cambridge, MA and other BIM project examples, learn how this unlikely pair has developed a formula for successful collaboration from early design to execution. The firms will demonstrate how combining the architect/engineer’s vision with the subcontractor’s means and methods and attention to detail has allowed them to avoid potential roadblocks and identify savings opportunities for future projects.

In its second generation of family-ownership, J.C. Cannistraro is an industry-leading specialty contractor that provides complete building services in the fields of Plumbing, HVAC and Fire Protection.
Michael holds a Masters Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Tufts University and an MBA from Boston University. He is a registered Professional Mechanical Engineer and has been in the construction industry since 2000. At J.C. Cannistraro Michael has worked as Project Manager, Project Engineer and is currently Vice President of Engineering, where he is responsible for the company’s BIM and virtual design operations.
Michael is a co-chair of the Boston BIM Collaborative, and serves on the BIM Committee for the Mechanical Contractors Association of America.
Sarah Vekasy, AIA, LEED AP, KlingStubbins

As a Project Manager and Associate of KlingStubbins in Cambridge, MA, Sarah works closely with the project designer and project architect to ensure project integrity through all phases of the design process. Sarah has used Building Information Modeling (specifically Revit) through all phases of design and construction as a project architect, responsible for technical documentation and coordination.
Sarah serves as a technology leader within KlingStubbins, working with teams to develop standards and procedures for BIM projects, as well as developing BIM Execution Plans with owners and consultants. She is also Co-Chair of the Emerging Leaders SubForum of the AGC BIMForum.
