Keynote - Ofelia García: Translanguaging: Reconceptualizing Language and Education
Session Abstract
A translanguaging theory distinguishes between the language features that people deploy to speak, listen, read and write, and the concept of a National Language. This presentation examines how adopting a theory of translanguaging reshapes the teaching of English to speakers of Other Languages, as well as how we view “English” and “other languages”. To do that, we focus on the teaching and learning in translanguaging classrooms that are traditionally viewed as ESL or Structured English Immersion classrooms. We describe the stance, design and moves of educators as they teach and assess, and the impact it makes on the learners.
