Beyond ACE: Assessing Military Service for Academic Credit

Session Description
The American Council on Education’s (ACE) Military Guide covers only formal military training for service connected academic credit. No standard guide assesses credit for veterans that is comparable to institutional award of credit for life experience criteria (civilian professional work). This session will explore assessing performance in military assignments for academic credit using a model similar to evaluating civil work experience, including some basic military terminology, correlating military experience to course outcomes, and a practical exercise.

Brief Bio
David Donathan has an extensive background in academic and career counseling, training and assessment. During his military career, he served tours of duty as an Army Instructor and as a Drill Sergeant, where he mastered concepts and practices of effective training and evaluation. As a United States Army officer, he commanded a company in The Netherlands during which he was responsible for the training, administration and professional development of the assigned men and women. At the Defense Language Training Institute Foreign Language Center, he was responsible for the government’s non-resident foreign language training and was actively engaged in the assessment of training and readiness, both as an instructor and an evaluator. He has completed numerous formal military schools and is a graduate of the United States Army’s Command and General Staff College. His academic background includes classroom experience from elementary through secondary school, as well as post-secondary. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration from Columbia College, a Master of Science in Human Resource Management and Development from Chapman University, and a Ph.D. in Professional Studies from Capella University.
