Keywords: 5 words maximum
Family finance, divorce, marital reconciliation, qualitative research
Very short description for use in the program to help attendees understand more than a title can describe
The objective was to explore how finances factored in the decision to reconcile after filing for divorce. Participants were asked to discuss how the resources available to them, specifically finances, influenced their decisions. A qualitative model was used. Seven couples (N = 14) who filed a petition for divorce but reconciled their marriages before the divorce proceedings were finalized, were interviewed. The topic of finances did not emerge as a major theme in the overall study. The issues that were factors in the decision making process included: support systems, outlook and attitude regarding marriage, and the importance of hard work in marriage.
