The “spectator” attitude towards language learning that Students of the New Global Elite (SONGEs) adopt in the for-profit classroom challenges teachers interested in creating engaged classrooms because of the disconnect between the kinds of rewards students hope to gain from the classroom experience and the rewards teachers more often value.
