T08: Islandora Done Three Ways: Reflections on migrating digital content and building a provincial-wide network of digital repositories.
Session Description
This session will discuss three perspectives of the adoption of open-source framework Islandora as a digital content management system and how these adoptions mark the move away from using proprietary software, the power of participating in a shared service, and the development of local expertise.
In 2015, SFU Library discontinued the use of OCLC’s CONTENTdm system to manage their digital collections and moved to Islandora. During the transition, library staff developed the ‘Move to Islandora Kit,’ (MIK) which converts source content files and accompanying metadata into ingest packages ready for importing. Mark Jordan will discuss the creation of MIK and provide an overview of the technical side of the SFU migration.
Also in 2015, BC-ELN coordinated the development of Arca: a collaborative project of BC post-secondary institutions to create a provincial-wide network of digital repositories. Sunni Nishimura will speak about the process of identifying Islandora as the solution for the shared service, the experience of working with discoverygarden to implement platforms for 7 early adopters, project challenges and successes, and the benefits and responsibilities for sites that are considering joining Arca.
Emily Carr University, as one of the early adopters of Arca, worked with SFU to migrate their digital content from CONTENTdm to the shared Islandora platform. Hillary Webb will discuss her experience working on the team to build Arca, the creation of new digital collections, and customization to make Arca work for the Emily Carr community.

Mark Jordan, Simon Fraser University Library
Biography
Mark Jordan is Head of Library Systems at Simon Fraser University. He is active in the Islandora community as a developer and as Chair of the Islandora Foundation Board. Recently, Mark was the technical lead in the Public Knowledge Project Private LOCKSS Network. He is also the author of Putting Content Online: A Practical Guide for Libraries (Chandos, 2006), and has taught courses and workshops in digital libraries, digital preservation, and software development.
Sunni Nishimura, BC-ELN
Biography
Sunni Nishimura is a project coordinator at the BC Electronic Library Network, BC's consortium of post-secondary libraries. Over the past 8 years she has implemented and coordinated a variety of learning services for BC post-secondary libraries, including AskAway and WriteAway. Her current focus is coordinating BC ELN Resource Sharing services and supporting the implementation of Arca multi-site Islandora repositories at 10 BC post-secondary sites .
Hillary Webb, Emily Carr University Library
Biography
Hillary is the Systems and Technical Services Librarian at Emily Carr University, where her portfolio includes everything from reference and instruction, to original cataloguing and systems support. She has presented on utilizing affordable or free solutions for library services such as research guides and electronic ILL delivery, and co-authored a paper about engaging with students on social media. Hillary is also a practicing textile artist working primarily in the medium of embroidery.
