T10: Speaking the language of philanthropy: tapping into the transformative power of private funding

Thursday, May 12, 2016 at 11:00 AM–12:15 PM PDT
Cedarbridge
Session Description

Generously Sponsored By: DFC Events

Libraries have traditionally relied on public funding to support the spaces, collections and programs that enrich the communities they serve. Today, philanthropic and grant funding are becoming increasingly important to both university and public libraries. Not surprisingly, the degree to which libraries incorporate fundraising into their strategic plans is a strong predictor of fundraising success. To do this can be disruptive – but when done well, the results of incorporating fundraising into the mandate of libraries can be transformational.
This session will provide an overview of the basic concepts of fundraising, and explore what librarians can to do support the success of their organization’s fundraising program.
Senior fundraising professionals from British Columbia’s academic and public libraries will reveal how your organization can incorporate fundraising into its strategic plans – and how you can easily support fundraising success without ever asking for money!
Topics covered include:
• The five stages of the donor cycle; discovery, assessment, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship
• The giving pyramid; annual giving, major gifts, and planned gifts
• Relationship building; who to talk to, how to find them, and how long before they make that transformational gift
• The value of stories and the value of librarians as storytellers
• Investing in fundraising and the practicalities of building philanthropic capital
• Similarities and differences between fundraising in academic and public libraries
• Keeping the library in the fundraising equation
• Transforming role of librarians as fundraisers, whether in public or private sector
• Interconnectivity and support between libraries towards transformation
• How fundraising, broadly speaking, communicates value of libraries in society to donors
