T18: I am a library technician – hear me roar!

Library technicians graduate with a wide range of skills and interests, readying them for diverse employment opportunities. Technicians work in all library sectors, in both public service and technical positions. Yet their career and education is often a mystery to others working in libraries. The panel will be comprised of technicians from public, health, and academic libraries who work in range of roles and departments. Their discussion will shed some light on the role of library technicians, their education, and where the future of library technicians is headed.

Sandra Cole, Surrey Libraries
Biography
Sandra graduated in 2011 from Langara with a Library Technician Diploma. She has worked for Surrey Libraries since 2006, first in circulation then in Information for the last 4 ½ years as an Information Services Technician. Has been active in LTAS since 2010 and is currently the recording secretary for LTAS. Sandra is also involved in the library union as Sergeant at arms for Cupe 402-02. Sandra is currently a part-time student at SFU working on a Bachelor of Arts.
John Park, UBC, eResources & Access Assistant
Biography
John graduated from the University of Alberta with a BSc and BA as well as studying some Occupational Therapy. Having had enough of academic life, he decided to punish himself with more and graduated from UFV with his Library Technician diploma in 2013. Despite the precarity of work, John enjoyed working in public and academic libraries for two years, until lightning struck and John started a permanent position at UBC in October 2015. As a member of LTAS, John's unquenchable thirst for knowledge drives him relentlessly to search for continuing education and professional development opportunities for LTAS members.
Linda Jones, Surrey Libraries – City Centre branch
Biography
Linda’s decades long work as a community organizer with BC’s largest anti-poverty coalition ended in 2000 and she started the Library Technician program at Langara soon after. For the past 12 years she has worked as a Youth Services Technician in Surrey, where she raised her children. Linda started the Lego program in Surrey Libraries, now a popular program at all 9 branches and a fundraiser for the system, runs two kids (elementary and pre-teen) book clubs, computer camps, weekly all ages storytimes and a weekly Stories for People with Different Abilities.
Anita Thompson, Abbotsford Regional Hospital and Cancer Centre Library (ARHCC)
Biography
Anita has worked for the Fraser Health Authority since 2010. She is currently at the ARHCC library serving physicians, staff, patients and members of the public. Anita is a graduate of the Library and Information Technology program offered by the University of the Fraser Valley. She is a co-chair of the Fraser Valley chapter of the Library Technicians and Assistants Section of the British Columbia Libraries Association.
Krissy Bublitz, Vancouver Public Library
Biography
Currently, I am acting as Library Technician in the Inspiration Lab at Vancouver Public Library. Fairly new to libraries, I completed my Library Technician Diploma from Langara College in 2013 and have worked in both Academic and Public Libraries since. With strong interests in applied sciences, records management and communication I aim to be a part of many library communities -- special, academic and public.
Assuming the role of British Columbia Library Technicians and Assistants Section Chair, my goal is to expand the LTAS community by facilitating flow of communication and sharing knowledge and expertise between members.
