F03: Feats and Failures: Creating Memorable Summer Reading Clubs

Friday, May 13, 2016 at 9:00 AM–10:15 AM PDT
Westminster 2
Session Description

What are the factors that make a Summer Reading Club activity or program a success? How do you adapt someone else’s “great idea” for your community? How do you transform an epic fail into a lesson-learned or even a success? Facilitated by SRC Chairs Kate Adams (RPL) and Emily Olsen (TNRD), this lively and interactive panel discussion will explore the hilights and the lowlights of SRC programming for libraries of all shapes and sizes. Come get some great ideas and share yours!

Speakers: Emily Olsen (@TNRD) is the Youth Services & Literacy Librarian for the Thompson-Nicola Regional District Library System. Emily coordinates the Summer Reading Club across the TNRD's 13 library branches and bookmobile to help make sure that all of the children in the Regional District have access to fun summer activities at their local branch. She also runs the Teen Reading Club for the TNRD Library System. Emily is currently serving as the incoming chair of the SRC Planning Committee.

Beth Dimond was on the path to becoming an elementary school teacher when a fortuitous side-step into the world of libraries took her down an amazing path that she still loves to travel every day. She has spent the last 35 years sharing this joy with the children and families of Prince Rupert, and is continually looking for ways to reach the children that need us the most! Having started back in the days when we had to create our own summer reading programs from scratch, and having sat on the SRC committee for two years, she really appreciates all the hard work that goes into our amazing program every year!

Kate Adams is the current chair of the SRC Planning Committee. Kate works with kids of all ages, ranging from babies to teens in her role as a children’s librarian at the Richmond Public Library. Having worked in the same placed for quite a while she is now experiencing the strange but rewarding feeling of having kids who once attended toddler time with her return as teen volunteers for after school programs!
