Open Textbooks, Open Education, Open Access, Open Pedagogy, Open Data, Open Research - Open is a hot topic in Universities currently. But how can librarians participate in the movement? Or better yet, how can they drive it? Find out what is happening at trendsetting institutions and their libraries within the Open movement - locally and internationally. Librarians often get mentioned in the same breath as the open education movement, yet some might not know where they actually fit in. Learn some quick methods you can start using almost immediately after the session. Come away with open strategies that you can use to kick start the movement at your institution, or to enhance the open movement that is already growing in your workplace!

Brenda Smith, Thompson Rivers University
Biography

Brenda is the Distance and Document Delivery Librarian at Thompson Rivers University (TRU) and a member of the BCOER Librarians. She is an advocate for open education and the role that librarians can play in the open education movement and community. At TRU, she works with faculty who are interested in using open education resources (OER) in their courses. A strong supporter of open education, TRU is active with BCcampus’ Open Textbook initiative and is a founding partner in the Open Educational Resources University (OERu).

Erin Fields, UBC Library
Biography

Erin Fields is a Liaison Librarian in the humanities and social sciences and the Flexible Learning Coordinator at the University of British Columbia. She is a member of BCOER. Her current areas of interest include open education, the impact of open learning on learning pathways, community building, the intersection of information literacies and digital literacies and emerging roles and library transformation.

Caroline Daniels, Kwantlen Polytechnic University
Biography

Caroline is the Systems, Web and ILL librarian at Kwantlen Polytechnic University and a member of the BCOER Librarians. She is an advocate for open education and is involved with the open movement at KPU in her capacity as a librarian. KPU instructors are regular adopters of open textbooks through BC Campus and beyond. KPU is an active partner in the Open Education Resources Universitas (OERu) whose membership spans five continents.
