Session Description

This session reports on the outcomes of the May 10th symposium on the Provincial Digital Library. That day long symposium will have laid out the next steps for the Provincial Digital Library and this short session will report on the work done to date and the next steps to be taken to build this valuable provincial resource. It is not too late for your involvement in the PDL and this session may give you ideas on how you, or your library might participate

Presenters:

Tim Atkinson: Tim Atkinson is University Librarian at Vancouver Island University and has spent the past 25 years working in various positions in the post-secondary system in B.C. Prior to going to VIU he was at Vancouver Community College and the University of British Columbia and before that he was an instructor in the Library Tech Program at UFV having moved into that position from the UFV Library. He began his career working in the Library of the Union of B.C. Indian Chiefs.

Ben Hyman: Ben Hyman is the Executive Director of the BC Libraries Cooperative. As a leader, technologist, policy strategist and advocate for the use of open tools, Ben brings creative approaches to the challenges facing the Co-op’s diverse membership. Before joining the Co-op, Ben held positions in the BC Public service on files relating to education transformation, technology, policy, legislation and funding. His leadership and management experience includes positions in government, post-secondary and private sector environments.

Anita Cocchia: Anita Cocchia is the Executive Director of the British Columbia Electronic Library Network (BC ELN), the consortium of BC post-secondary institutions. Anita has been a librarian for 26 years with a focus on library consortia. Her work with BC ELN extends beyond BC post-secondaries through strategic partnerships with public and health libraries, the K-12 sector, as well as with other post-secondary institutions and consortia across Canada and internationally. Most recently Anita championed the Arca Digital Repository Network, a provincial installation of repositories using Islandora open source software.
