F12: Evolving into a community orientated hub for your service area

Friday, May 13, 2016 at 1:00 PM–1:45 PM PDT
Elmbridge
Session Description

As soon as its coal mines idled, the Library’s role as a community hub expanded to accommodate individuals affected by a loss of income due to the decline in the resource based industry. Within days of the mine ‘idling’, the Library began to see clients who had no formal resumes, usually due to low literacy levels; both reading/writing literacy and computer literacy. Library staff quickly realized that there was no place for these clients to receive one on one supportive help. The Library became the place where people struggling with literacy and lacking computer skills could seek help to access different services they required since miners are now forced to deal with huge international companies with large HR departments rather than exchanging numbers with local business men. These services were in the form of a resume writing service which began as a temporary, volunteer service, it has transformed over the past year and a half into a critical, vital Library service as 2 more mines have idled. Also we have evolved from preparing/assisting with resumes to writing cover letters, helping with online job searches, applying for and reporting to EI and helping young mothers apply for assistance and other services

Now that the community is in the second year of mine closures, EI has ended for some, resulting in increased use of the Food Bank. Word reached the Library that there were children at school who were not eating properly usually because both parents were not working so the Library began an After School Snack Program. This Program provides snacks (3 items: fruit, dairy and grain) and a self-directed activity such as Board games, painting, movies, Lego, etc. to children and teens. Children are able to meet and socialize with friends in a safe space, have a much-needed snack and enjoy activities. In addition, the Library and Northern Lights College received a CALP grant that is supporting a community kitchen where individuals with low functional literacy can learn meal planning, budgeting, measuring and cooking; taking home a nutritious meal for their family once a week.
