Transforming a Windowless Room into an Open Door Teaching and Learning Studio

Session Description
This session will discuss how Syracuse University has transformed a small, unused space into an effective teaching and learning studio that is now regularly used by faculty across campus to produce engaging materials for online courses to keep students motivated in the digital learning environment. This has all be done with 1 full time administrator, and 2 part time student workers. The technology available in this space includes, but is not limited to, a lightboard, waccom tablet, screen-capture software, recording equipment, green screens, video cameras and studio quality lights. As faculty leverage the technology available to them, a conversation about how to integrate the final product into their course through instructional design is also done.

Brief Bio
Karen Zannini Bull is the director of online program and services at University College of Syracuse University where she supports the institution’s online initiative across campus for 11 schools and colleges. Prior to her appointment at Syracuse University, Bull served two roles at Onondaga Community College; the assistant director of distance education from 2010-2012 and the director of program evaluation from 2012-2013.
Outside of Syracuse University, she promotes academic excellence and lifelong learning through her service on the Rosamond Gifford Zoo education committee, her role as secretary of the board for the New England Region of the University Professional and Continuing Education Association (UPCEA), and her work empowering women as a board member on the Women’s Fund of Central New York. Bull obtained a doctoral of philosophy in Instructional Design, Development and Evaluation in the School of Education at Syracuse University. She also holds a MEd in Instructional Technology from the University of Maine at Orono, and a BS in Computer Science from Allegheny College.
