Thinking (Concurrent Session): 60-75 minutes

Session Description

With the rapid growth in office technology, the role of the administrative assistant has evolved from performing clerical tasks to the management of information and communications. Montgomery County Community College has created a competency-based Office Assistant Certificate to help displaced workers in the field learn these new skills that are now necessary to secure meaningful employment. This session will explore the transition from traditional courses to competency-based courses from a faculty perspective, including process, curriculum design, assessment--and the technology to support it all. Participants will learn how to outline guiding principles of a CBE approach to learning and how this approach supports adult learners; understand the process of converting a course from a traditional format to a CBE format; overcome CBE challenges inherent in a traditional educational technology; and compare student and faculty CBE experiences across two LMS platforms (Motivis Learning and Blackboard).
