Session Description:
Helping students overcome the obstacles they encounter in their everyday lives is at the heart of Case Management. Central to the mission of retaining and graduating students is assistance in resolving issues that distract students to the point they cannot focus on success in the classroom. Issues concerning housing, finances , transportation, health, and access to academic assistance are among the many issues college administrators and faculty hear about each year from students. In light of this, colleges and universities have come to recognize the benefit of dedicating staff members to work flexibly and creatively with at-risk students to ensure proper access to care. Case Management, with its roots in social work and psychology, is increasingly becoming the norm for managing student care. ETSU’s unique partnership with our MSW program will be just one of the topics covered in this open exchange/discussion session.

Brief Bio
Carla R. Warner, Ed.D. has 30 years experience in higher and adult education with East Tennessee State University. She is the Director of Adult, Commuter & Transfer Services at ETSU. In conjunction with ETSU's Office of Student Affairs and the ETSU Department of Social Work, she is co-directing a pilot "Undergraduate Student Success Case Management" role for the campus. Her Masters in Adult & Continuing Education is from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and her EdD in Higher Education Administration is from East Tennessee State University.

Dr. Michael Smith, East Tennessee State University
Brief Bio
Dr. Michael Smith has served one university or another as BSW Director, MSW Director, department chair, or dean over a career in higher education that began in 1981 and that has seen him employed at universities in southern California, Texas, Kansas, Missouri, and East Tennessee. Prior to earning his doctorate, Dr. Smith served in the U.S. Air Force as a social work officer where his responsibilities embraced clinical (i.e., mental health) practice along program development and administration. He is co-editor/co-author of "Social Work in the Workplace" (with Dr. Gary Gould), the critically acclaimed examination of occupational social work. In addition, Dr. Smith's primary areas of expertise include issues central to social work education, administration, and social welfare history.

Jennifer Rice is Assistant Director of Adult, Commuter & Transfer Services at East Tennessee University. She holds a Master of Professional Studies Degree with a concentration in Strategic Leadership from ETSU. She has 15 years of experience working with adult learners and student services for at risk students.
