Innovation in Faculty Development: Faculty Training to Improve Student Inquiry Skills

Session Description
Continuing educators are often looking for innovative ways to work with faculty. One way to build trust among faculty is to create and incentivize a faculty development program. As part of ETSU’s Quality Enhancement Plan, the university has developed a faculty development model that instructors find useful and engaging. The goals of this workshop are to describe a faculty development model that strengthens relationships between faculty members across disciplines, departments, and colleges and demonstrate strategies to improve students’ inquiry skills. Participants in this workshop will be actively engaged in strategies designed to improve students’ abilities to ask insightful questions, seek and evaluate information, and use information to solve problems. Participants will also be asked to develop a working plan to develop their successful faculty development programs within their own institutions.

Amy Johnson, East Tennessee State University
Brief Bio
Dr. Johnson has nearly 15 years of experience in continuing higher education, adult degree programming, teaching and faculty development, and first-year experience courses. Currently, she is the Director of INtopFORM, East Tennessee State University’s Quality Enhancement Plan. In this role, she leads the university’s efforts to improve students’ inquiry skills. She develops, facilitates, and assesses faculty workshops. She also facilitates interdisciplinary faculty learning communities aimed at helping faculty learn best practices for improving student engagement and critical thinking. Dr. Johnson also has significant experience in the field of adult and continuing higher education. She is committed to changing adult lives through continuing education. Her scholarship has focused on the science of student learning as well as success factors for adult and non-traditional students. She is currently serving on the board of directors for the Association of Continuing Higher Education. She also serves this organization as the 2016 Conference Planning Committee Co-chair and she has just been appointed Chair of the Research Committee. She is also a past-chair of the ACHE South Region. Dr. Johnson earner her B.A. from the College of William and Mary in Virginia and a M.A. and Ed.D. from East Tennessee State University. As a person, Amy also values spending time with her extended family. She enjoys a good campfire that is surrounded by good conversation, a few guitars, and lots of singing voices. She is a big fan of Americana and Folk music, low brow novels, and almost all HBO series.
