Working with students who self-harm, are disengaged or disruptive can be difficult for all school counselors. Additionally, SST meetings or conferences where counselors face resistant teachers and parents are also problematic. Motivational interviewing (MI) is an advanced skill that can aid school counselors with disaffected students and challenging or ambivalent adults by helping to clarify goals, establish and commit to interventions, and sustained follow-through. Motivational interviewing is a well-researched tool well-suited for professional school counselors.
