Abstract
With student to school counselor ratios mandates at 450:1 in Georgia and 60% of youth reporting have been exposed to crime, school counselors are likely to come into contact with multiple students in crisis. Repeated exposure of students reporting traumatic events can leave school counselors susceptible to "vicarious trauma". According to Francoise Mathieu between 40% and 85% of “helping professionals” develop vicarious trauma. This presentation will discuss symptoms, persistence and methods to decrease the persistence of VT.
