2013 Annual Conference

du 5 au 8 November 2013

Lexington, KY

It is time to review the schedule for the placement of your session in the AAACE Agenda. This is the final draft of the Schedule. When you look up your name, use the detail listing to check what days/times you asked to be placed. This is a huge program and we can accommodate necessary changes in day and time now, but may not be able to do so after September 1, 2013 except in emergencies. Please carefully check your placement and send any requests to Ginger Phillips, AAACE Conference Planner with AAACE Session Change Request in the subject line. We will respond to your email, but it may take us up to a week to do so. Thanks for your help in "fine tuning" this agenda!

Session Abstract

Faculty and administrators from Friends University will share the complexities, angst, and lessons learned while moving from a cohort model to a carousel model in their adult college programs.

This interactive session will be helpful and insightful for administrators, faculty, and recruiters of adult college programs. Nearly all universities are seeking better ways to recruit and retain students in their adult professional programs. Changing program models is one way universities are responding. Whether considering moving from cohort to carousel or carousel to cohort, there are numerous pitfalls that may be avoided with careful planning and open communication. Anyone involved in such major changes will benefit from the the experiences of the College of Adult and Professional Studies at Friends University.

Learning Outcomes

Participants will:
1. Recognize the needs of various adult audiences
2. Examine differences between cohort and carousel models
3. Analyze rationale for changes to models
4. Identify potential pitfalls
5. Determine best ways to plan and implement change
6. Predict the success or failure of models and changes to models

Session Description

Competition for students in adult college programs is rampant. In order to successfully compete, colleges and universities are expected to provide a variety of attendance and completion options, including online, on-ground, and blended courses and degree programs. In this session, faculty and administrators from the College of Adult and Professional Studies at Friends University will share the reasoning behind a change from a cohort degree completion model to a more traditional and flexible carousel model, the complexity of providing both models to accomodate different audiences and locations, and the difficulties involved balancing opinions, habits, and personalities to create a sense of ownership among a variety of stakeholders. The perspectives of both faculty and administration provide insight into the many challenges faced. Preliminary results of the changes will also be shared, as well as emerging challenges and concerns.

Efforts are made to try to schedule sessions on the day preferred by the Primary Presenter, though this cannot be guaranteed. Please check your preference.
