Becoming Social-Media Savvy: Building Adult ESL Language Skills for Participation in a Digital World

Session Abstract
Social media communication builds partnerships, provides knowledge and enhances participation in society. This session will include practical examples and lesson plans to explore this topic with adult ESL students.
Target Audience
This is a practical session geared towards instructors of adult ESL students and those interested in sociocultural use of language in context.
Learning Outcomes
After attending this session the participants will be able to do the following: 1. Name and describe key elements of major mainstream social media outlets; 2. Describe differences in social language use among the social media outlets; 3. Identity theoretical constructs of social language use relevant to social media participation; 4. Lead a lesson on “how to effectively participate in social media” for adult ESL learners.
Session Description
This purpose of this session is to call attention to specific language use in various social media outlets. Adult ESL students may not be aware of how language is used in different contexts and how similar words in different contexts may change the meaning of the words. They also may not realize the wealth of information that is easily accessible to them to facilitate connections within and beyond their local community. In addition, from a teacher perspective, the accessibility of authentic language in context is a valuable instructional resource that should be maximized.
Efforts are made to try to schedule sessions on the day preferred by the Primary Presenter, though this cannot be guaranteed. Please check your preference.
