Rebuilding Lives: Narratives of the Educational Experiences of Displaced Workers

Session Abstract
This qualitative narrative study focuses on the stories and transformative learning experiences of displaced workers who participated in the Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) program after losing their manufacturing jobs.
Target Audience
This session will be of interest to adult educators and administrators who work with displaced workers as well as those with a research interest in transformative education or personal narratives.
Learning Outcomes
Participants will be able to :
Analyze and discuss the perspectives of displaced workers enrolled in higher education programs;
Identify potential barriers to learning for displaced workers enrolled in higher education programs;
Evaluate transformative aspects of the learning experiences of displaced workers enrolled in higher education programs; and,
Evaluate the efficacy of telling stories in helping achieve transformative learning.
Session Description
As U.S. companies compete in a global environment, manufacturing jobs are lost as companies move production overseas. Workers who have spent decades working in manufacturing jobs find themselves displaced and ill-prepared to find new jobs. The Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) program assists displaced workers by paying educational expenses and providing income support. Educators who work with displaced workers in higher education need an understanding of the challenges and barriers these students face. This narrative study focuses on the personal stories of displaced workers with special emphasis on the transformative effect of education.
Efforts are made to try to schedule sessions on the day preferred by the Primary Presenter, though this cannot be guaranteed. Please check your preference.
