Building Different Engagement and Relationships in a Religious Group: Beyond Partnership

Session Abstract
This paper explores how a collective process of enhancing faith within a house church can transcend the boundary of partnership by using cultural historical activity theory (CHAT).
Target Audience
This paper aims for two groups of target audiences. The first are the religious adult educators and staffs in religious adult education programs that are responsible for life-long religious education in community of faith (church). The other target audiences are individuals who are interested in cultural-historical activity theory (CHAT).
Learning Outcomes
This study used ethnography as a qualitative research approach to examine engagement and learning relationship between Christian members in a small group (house church) and the effect of the relationship to their specific lives. By using socio-cultural psychological analysis (CHAT) to the research, the research could find a deeper engagement and learning relationship between the members of the house church like family relationship called "a spiritual family," and it could differentiate their engagement and relationships from their previous church experiences and learning relationship such as hierarchic teacher-student relations.
Session Description
From the socio-cultural research, I could find three core founding: a unique learning relationship between the religious group members; a transformative change through engagement in their meeting; and a modeling of learning relationship. In the group, the Christian members enabled to share and expose their faults and failures of life such as a marital quarrel because they felt family relationships to other members. Due to the matchless relations, they could deeply engage in the spiritual learning process and building the community of faith in the meeting. From this unique learning relationship and engagement, they could change their specific life experiences, and then they could develop a modeling of learning relationship. In the tiny group, the leader could have a fatherhood role, and he could help other members to be a future leader of a prospective anther group within the church.
