A Sustainable Foundation in Higher Education for Organizational Ethics: A 3-Part Plan

Session Abstract
This multi-part study examined the ethical climate in a university division, assessed administrators’ knowledge and skills, and proposed training. Providing a foundation for determining ethical climate helps administrators target strategic action.
Target Audience
For administrators and ethics officers, carrying the responsibility for an ethical work environment can feel daunting. By assessing the knowledge and skills of administrators’, measuring ethical climate of a division, and developing a training program, administrators’ ensure a systematic approach that can provide a greater safeguard. The research methodology and the comprehensive nature of this program plan for ethics in a work environment will be engaging for those new to research, including graduate students. Additionally, the content and methods of this session are relevant to faculty, trainers, facilitators, curriculum designers, and others who are interested in ethics.
Learning Outcomes
Following this session, participants will be able to (1) describe the construct of ethical climate, (2) compare ethical climate and leadership influence, and (3) discuss an ethical awareness training design. Because research shows that it is key for student affairs administrators to understand their impact on ethical climates, this research will be useful by providing a foundation for determining ethical climate present, thereby helping administrators know the culture they are influencing.
Session Description
This session begins with a brief overview of ethics/ethical climates, generally and in student affairs, and information about the Ethical Climate Questionnaire (ECQ) used in this study, (using a short lecture, an icebreaker video, and visual presentation). The significant session focus will be a short lecture on the results from research in one university, a next steps brainstorm activity, a small and large group discussion regarding ethics in session participants’ settings, and further ideas for research on ethics in higher education. A preview of the ethics workshop will occur, with a sampling of training game used, followed by a reflection exercise and evaluation.
A graduate student as the principal investigator, along with a student affairs ethics officer, created a collaborative approach for advancing ethics research while implementing a student affairs division ethics program. Participants will leave the session with the ECQ, reference list, and sample outline for ethics training.
Efforts are made to try to schedule sessions on the day preferred by the Primary Presenter, though this cannot be guaranteed. Please check your preference.
