Program Summary/Abstract Description
In order to develop the language and literacy skills needed to become truly biliterate, teachers will learn how to identify what defines text complexity in Spanish and English and the skills students need to apply to those texts. This presentation will outline what qualitative measures define text complexity in Spanish and English. This presentation will discuss how reader task and language structures in Spanish and English impacts a readers ability to complete meaningful reading tasks and access a given text. Further, this presentation will compare how the 6 pillars of literacy development are the similar in each language but the discrete skills a reader must master in English and in Spanish are drastically different. Teachers will learn what is different in developing literacy across both languages, receive strategies for strategically supporting students where they are at, and have a clear understanding of what skills and abilities translate across languages and which do not.
