Key Words

Stock, non-primary real estate ownership, portfolio allocation

Short Description

Investors allocate their resources to difference types of assets to achieve their financial goals. Statistics show that in the long-run, investors receive very competitive returns from the stock market. However, prior literature consistently report that a good proportion of US households do not hold stocks either directly or indirectly through mutual funds both in and outside of their retirement accounts. Research that focus on households who do not hold stocks is scarce. The literature would benefit from understanding of these households’ financial status and asset allocation. This study contributes to the literature by identifying the factors that are associated with investment in stocks (both directly held and indirectly held through mutual funds) and non-primary real estate assets including non-residential real estates and non-primary residential real restates. Findings of this study will help researchers and financial professionals as well as educators and policymakers understand the asset allocation of non-stock investors and factors that contribute to household asset allocation.
