Short Description

Many developed countries are experiencing or projected to experience population declines. Aging of a society may have negative consequences such as tightening of the labor market, which in turn, may lead to lower economic growth. Moreover, the shortage of workers could imply lower tax revenues for a government, which would lead to declines in the living standard of seniors due to cuts of government spending on social security. Given the consequences of such population trends, multi-children families are desirable by governments and demographic policy makers. At the same time, many multi-child families face more severe economic challenges relative childless households. For example, multi-child families are more likely to live with very low per capita income implying that they often experience poverty. Several policies and programs have been proposed and implemented in recent years with an explicit goal of strengthening economic well-being on families with children. The purpose of this article is to assess the impact of the amount of family benefits on the level of poverty among children in selected countries in the European Union (EU).
