Domestic outsourcing, gender division of housework, childcare, home economics

Short Description

As more women are educated and employed conflicting with traditional gender role and values, one of strategies to deal with housework or childcare is outsourcing. The paper examines the associations between domestic outsourcing and married couple’s hours spent on housework and childcare in South Korea using panel data (2010, 2012, 2014, 2016). OLS regressions with fixed effects on individual, district, and year indicate that using domestic outsourcing is significantly associated with decrease in wife’s contribution to domestic work by 7.8 to 8.0 hours per week. The longitudinal data analysis also suggests that outsourcing for childcare is associated with decrease in mother’s contribution to childcare by 16.5 hours per week. However, time use of neither the husband nor the father seems to have association with outsourcing, which is consistent with a study done by Van der Lippe, et al. (2004). The next step in the analysis will be estimating the associations with domestic outsourcing according to couples’ employment status. In addition, we plan to compare the impacts of outsourcing from external resources such as paid helpers or institutional childcare, and that from internal resources such as help from families.
