Symposium B: Family Matters: Or Does It? Examining Economic Outcomes for Single- and Married-Person Households Using Consumer Expenditure Surveys Data

Short Description

This session features presentations of current, CE-based research-in-progress into topics of interest to the ACCI audience, focusing on relationships of expenditures to economic welfare for families. The first two explore trade-offs that families make when they have children. The third examines expenditures on alcohol for single persons and married couple families (with and without children) by Millennials and older consumers. The fourth examines the relationship between rental equivalence (what homeowners report their homes would rent for) and actual rents paid by families renting similar homes. The gap is important because rental equivalence is a key factor in computing the Consumer Price Index, an economic indicator that affects wages, planning for retirement, and other family matters. The final presentation includes training in use of CE data.
